Bar & Bat Mitzvah Center

29 May 2019

Dear KI B’nei Mitzvah Families,

We are so excited to be celebrating with you in the coming months! There will be many forms of learning and preparation along the way, and we are looking forward to accompanying you on that journey. KI’s Rabbinic and Administrative teams are here to work alongside your family as you go through the b’nei mitzvah process.

Seven years ago, KI created a b’nei mitzvah seminar, which you will have the chance to participate in this year, as you prepare for an upcoming Bar/Bat Mitzvah between June 2020-August 2021. Some of you may be thinking, “Gosh, this seems early! Our child’s simcha isn’t for a long time yet.” Indeed! While in the past, the b’nei mitzvah seminar has coincided with the year of celebration, in order to promote better attendance and to ensure the seminar feels relevant to students no matter when their simcha falls in the calendar year, the seminar will take place during the year prior to the
students becoming b’nei mitzvah.

Our focus for the seminar is on discerning values, building relationships, and grounding Jewish practice as our b’nei mitzvah become adult members of our community and of the world as a whole. Beginning this fall, parents and children associated with this year’s cohort will be invited to an individualized meeting with members of the clergy to better get to know you and your desires about this process. Then, during the course of this preparatory year, students and their parents will join together for monthly sessions of learning and community building. You’ll learn more about the whole program at our first meeting: Sunday, November 3rd from 3:00-4:30pm (designed for both parents AND students), and in the meantime, the enclosed timeline is meant as a helpful reference in your planning process.

Please let us know ASAP if these times/dates don’t work for you, as it is our intention that all students celebrating a bar/bat mitzvah between June 2020-August 2021 will participate fully in this seminar. We recognize that your children have many competing commitments, and we appreciate you prioritizing their Jewish formation by ensuring regular attendance at these sessions. We’ll send a more detailed version of our schedule as we get closer to the Fall, but for now, please mark your calendars:
