Executive Director, Congregation Kehillath Israel

Congregation Kehillath Israel (“KI”), one of the country’s most storied and inclusive Conservative congregations in the United States, serving 400 families from an exceptional multi-use campus in the heart of Brookline, Massachusetts, seeks a dynamic and innovative Executive Director (“ED”) who will build on the successes of the past while positioning KI as a congregation of the future.

Starting in 2016, KI embarked on a massive, thoughtful and pioneering building renovation that is now home to 5 congregations and civic organizations, an innovation lab, a scalable social hall and a socially progressive, accommodating pre and religious school.  KI’s innovative endeavor is so unique that it is a case study for Harvard Business School.  KI’s newly constructed campus is ready for an ED who can take an institution that is redefining the community of faith in the 21st century and bring excellence to its operation.

KI’s vision for the future is to be more than a site for prayer, but Boston’s Jewish hub for arts, culture, music, continued learning and community gathering.

The ED will report to the Board through the President and will work collaboratively with the Rabbis, professional staff, lay leaders, and members of the congregation.  The ED will supervise key professional staff.  The ED will be a member of the Executive Team comprised of the Rabbis, President, and ED, respectfully sharing in the triad of this sacred partnership that will guide the vision and operation of the congregation.

The successful candidate will possess a growth mindset, be mission-driven and have significant experience in strategic organizational leadership.

A day in the life of the ED may include:

  • Networking with Greater Boston congregation leaders on best practices for campus security
  • Meeting with the Rabbis to plan for an upcoming holiday service and subsequent communal meal
  • Coaching the administrative coordinator of the synagogue office on implementing new email marketing practices
  • Proposing a website enhancement to the Membership Committee
  • Showcasing the event space to a member family for an upcoming wedding
  • Negotiating with a new catering vendor
  • Identifying a sponsor for continued learning events in the library and other spaces
  • Visiting the preschool to assess plans for a renovated indoor play area

Executive Leadership, Strategic Visioning & Planning, and Organizational Management

  • Ensures that the policies, budgets and other directives of the President, lay leaders and Board are implemented in support of the mission to fulfill annual and long-term goals through a close collaboration with the clergy, religious school staff and community volunteers.
  • Provides oversight for all business and financial operations including annual planning, human resources, budgeting, building and facilities, communication and technology.

Operational Management and Team Building (with the VP, Administration)

  • Hires, on-boards, trains and provides ongoing supervision and guidance to key staff members.
  • Maintains flexible leadership style that motivates, inspires and empowers staff through active communication and delegation and promotes collaboration and staff retention.
  • Focuses on professional development, including performance measurements, coaching and team-building.
  • Maintains employee files, ensures thorough, fair and timely annual personnel reviews are conducted, coordinates annual updating of the Employee Handbook and relevant financial and HR policies and ensures that job descriptions are current.

Fundraising and Financial Planning and Analysis Management (with VP, Finance and Treasurer)

  • In partnership with the Rabbi, Board and community leadership, ensure the development and execution of resource development strategies and methodologies to meet established goals, as well as keeping up with other trends in philanthropy.
  • Works closely with Board leadership staff on campaigns to raise funds to enable KI to meet current and future needs of members and stakeholders.
  • Maintains a proactive approach in raising funds through relationship building, cultivation and stewardship of current and prospective donors, with particular attention to the major donors and those from previous capital campaigns.
  • Works with lay and professional leadership in donor stewardship to coordinate and support fundraising efforts, including annual and ongoing support, bequests, capital and in-kind gifts.
  • Understands financial management and accounting principles and ensures that fiscal controls and procedures are adhered to.
  • Implements Board policies for allocation and distribution of funds.
  • Prepares annual budget in consultation with the VP of Finance, Rabbis, Board and other relevant KI employees.
  • Prepares monthly financial reports and provides analysis for the Board and appropriate committees.
  • Oversees payments to vendors and reviews payroll.

Membership Engagement (with VP, Membership and Office Staff)

  • Serves as first contact for prospective member inquiries.
  • Accurately maintains membership database (ShulCloud) for accurate membership records; prepares reports using same.
  • Works directly with the VP of Membership and Membership Committee to create and maintain a robust system for recruitment, engagement and retention of membership.
  • Works in concert with the VP of Membership and Membership Committee to address areas of concern regarding lapsed members, resignations, nonpayment of commitments and inactive members.
  • Coordinates the annual membership renewal process and cultivation of membership donations.
  • Regularly attends all KI services and programs to support member engagement and facilitate community building.

Regular and Major Events, High Holy Days and Life-Cycle Events (with VP, Avodah and Office Staff)

  • Responsible for all logistics and administrative tasks for High holidays and other major Jewish holidays. Includes coordination of ticketing, seating, décor, distribution of marketing or promotional materials, management of external vendors, staff assignments and lay leadership involvement.
  • Acts as point person when members experience life cycle events (births, illnesses, deaths) and works with the Rabbis and other relevant stakeholders to coordinate respectful response, acknowledgment, celebration, memorials and community-wide communication.
  • Acts as point person for all members with B’nei Mitzvah and other lifecycle events on early planning, scheduling and space accommodations.
  • Collaborates with VP of Youth Education and Rabbis on their roles related to the same.
  • Actively markets space for member celebrations – weddings, birthdays and other parties. Leads synagogue staff to ensure positive, revenue-generating and detailed experiences.
  • Oversees all events scheduled on campus throughout the year.
  • Maintains a detailed calendar for all recurring and ad hoc events within synagogue space.

 

Board and Volunteer Engagement

  • Attends Board meetings and collaborates with the Rabbis and President to set objectives for the Board and its committees.
  • Partners with the Board leadership to identify, cultivate, recruit and empower new Board members by creating dynamic and supportive relationships.
  • Provides support to Board members and key volunteers in ways that demonstrates appreciation, focuses their skills, inspires them to action and strengthens their commitment to KI.

Facility Management (with the VP, Facilities, Facilities Manager and Events Manager)

  • Supervises the Facility Manager who is responsible for all facility operations including building maintenance and repair.
  • Leads building modifications and improvements, from design through to completion.
  • With the emergency preparedness team, manages tenant relationships, physical campus issues and security, including overseeing security procedures, systems and physical enhancements, as well as management of 3rd party security services.
  • Oversees the use of the campus’ Kosher kitchens, including caterer coordination. Ensures list of approved caterers is current.
  • Manages contracts and vendor relationships (custodial, maintenance and contractors). Must be available for after-hours synagogue events and emergencies.
  • Manages all internal operating and software systems, including ShulCloud.
  • Coordinates with external IT service provider on computer systems and technology.
  • Ensures positive working relationship with partner organizations and communities and leads regular meetings with same on use and maintenance of space.
  • In maintaining events (see above), ensures proper calendaring, tracking, set-up, break-down of all events using synagogue space; prepares reporting regarding same.

 

Marketing and Communications (with the VPs, Marketing, Membership and Adult Education)

  • Works with relevant stakeholders to create and broadly disseminate timely information to the community and beyond – via emails, Shabbat or Holiday materials, social media and website.
  • Maintains detailed current and future roadmap for all events, including calendar of holidays and special events.
  • Proactively coordinates with relevant stakeholders (Rabbis, VP of Adult Education, VP of Membership) to market all events to the community and beyond for maximum attendance and participation.
  • Oversees staff responsible for communications including website, electronic and print communications.
  • Helps to promote KI in the larger community by representing KI at appropriate community, regional, and national groups or organizations.
  • Maintains relationships with local media and other communication outlets, as needed.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate is a skilled and organized people and project leader who can effectively manage the complex operations of the Congregation.

  • Bachelor’s degree required.  Master’s degree or certificate in non-profit management ideal.
  • 10-15 years management experience in a non-profit or corporate setting that includes managing teams, volunteers, programs and events.
  • Synagogue management experience is a plus.
  • Demonstrated expertise and competence in finance and budgeting, recordkeeping, reporting, financial controls, payroll administration and preparation of annual budgets.
  • Proven experience with facility management, contracting for services, and vendor negotiations.
  • Demonstrated experience in fundraising including major gifts, special events, annual appeals, and planned giving.
  • Ability to recruit, motivate and organize volunteers.
  • Understanding of the relationship between the Board and Rabbinic or clergy professions and the ability to work both independently and as a team member. Skilled at managing up to multiple stakeholders.
  • Understanding of Conservative Jewish values, rituals, customs and holiday practices.
  • Ability and willingness to take an active leadership role in congregational life, including regular attendance at Shabbat services, holiday/festival services and congregational activities.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to relate effectively and sustain relationships with clergy, staff, lay leadership, volunteers and members of the congregation.
  • Computer skills in Excel, QuickBooks, ShulCloud or equivalent database management system. Familiarity with database software, email newsletters, social media, and website maintenance. Understanding of room booking or facilities management systems.

  • Able to foster collaboration, build consensus and create win-win interactions.
  • Excellent organizational, written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.

Compensation and Benefits

This is a full-time exempt position with some flexibility in hours, but will require weekend and evening work.  The role offers health insurance, paid vacation and sick days, congregation membership, reduced tuition in KI’s pre and religious schools, professional membership association dues and convention expense reimbursement, as well as other benefits.

Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience.
